The Factory

Through the Ages

1850 à 1856 : The Beginning

In 1850, a candle factory was established in the heart of the Marseille countryside. Around 1856, part of the candle manufacturing site was transformed into a true soap factory. The Fer à Cheval brand was born.

Why Are We Called Fer à Cheval Soap Factory?

“Fer à Cheval” means “horseshoe” in French.

In the 19th century, it was common practice to name a soap brand or business after an expression, a word, or a symbol associated with happiness and good fortune, in the hope of ensuring prosperity under the best possible auspices.

The emblem of the Marseille Soap Factory also features seven nail holes instead of the usual eight—once again, a lucky number. With so many symbols of good fortune, success and prosperity seemed destined.

Today, we are still proud to remain the oldest soap factory in Marseille still in operation, continuing to produce Marseille soap according to its ancestral recipe. We like to believe that this name will continue to bring us luck, after more than 167 years of faithful service.
