Savonnerie Fer à Cheval

Founded in 1856, Fer à Cheval is the oldest and largest soap works in Marseille, and one of the very last in France to keep alive the traditional, artisanal method of making Marseille soap under the expert eye of its master soap makers.
For more than 160 years, the soap works has continued to craft this iconic product with tradition, precision, and a great deal of passion, following the recipe certified by the Edict of Colbert in 1688 and reinforced by Napoleon Bonaparte's decree of 1812, which is the source of its worldwide renown today.
We are at the very source of the product and pass this expertise down from generation to generation, to the point of now being recognized as a Living Heritage Company and holder of the Qualité Tourisme and Origine France Garantie labels for time honored craftsmanship made in France.
Our soap works is listed as a Historic Monument, alongside sites such as Château d'If, the Cité Radieuse, and Fort Saint Jean. In Marseille, only 90 monuments hold this listing, and Fer à Cheval is the only soap works among them.
Historically, our factory is a heritage site bearing witness to the traditional activity of Marseille's 19th century soap making industry.
